Our Neighborhood

Our folks live in the three northernmost neighborhoods in New York City’s Manhattan: Washington Heights, Inwood to the north, and Hamilton Heights/Harlem to the south.   We serve the vibrant, ever-changing group of people who live, work, study and serve with us.

Here, you can get a Café con Leche and a Starbucks espresso all on the same few blocks.  This area has long been a community of immigrants, so like most New York City areas our neighborhood is diverse.  Washington Heights is especially known for its Dominican flavor, and the seat of the country’s first Dominican elected official.  While Northern Manhattan is more than 70% Latino, there are also populations of Jewish, Anglo, Asian, and multi-racial friends who have made their homes here.  Among us are distinct populations of musicians and artists, service professionals, medical professionals, freelancers, educators, social workers, and other professionals and their families.

Uptown is the home to the George Washington Bridge, Columbia University’s health sciences campuses, the Cloisters Museum, Yeshiva University, and the National Track and Field Hall of Fame.  Inwood boasts the most parkland of any New York City neighborhood.

Like many places in Manhattan, rent prices are rising steeply each year, beyond the limits of affordability for many.  Uptowners face personal difficulties: from finding access quality healthcare, to quality counseling services, quality education and guidance for their children.  Many wonder how to create sustaining community in the midst of what can be a chaotic and exhausting urban environment.

Bringing such a diverse population together is not easy, yet you will hardly find anyone in the city more dedicated to building a sustainable community than Northern Manhattanites.  Our church seeks to follow Christ by declaring the unique hope of the Gospel, living under its power, and joining our neighbors in renewing community life.

We love our neighborhood.  But don’t just listen to us:
To learn more, this is a good place to start.
