You cannot walk the streets of our neighborhood without noticing that there are ways we can make it a better place to live. Some go without health care, some go without adequate education, some go without clean streets and parks, some go without the spiritual strength to live in our great area of Manhattan. We believe that it is important for us to be a church not just in the neighborhood of Northern Manhattan, but a church for the neighborhood as well. The good news of Jesus Christ is that he has brought to earth the Kingdom of God, where “all of human life flourishes,” and he calls broken men and women to be healed by returning to him in faith, on the merit of his life, death, and resurrection. The Kingdom of God has broken into earth through the coming of the King. A great, astounding irony of living under Jesus’ kingship is that he calls the broken men and women who are part of the problem of a broken world, to be agents of his renewal. Under Jesus’ kingship, sinful people turn, moved by Jesus’ sacrifice, and begin to work for the “human life flourishing” agenda of their King. We draw strength from his call to broken people, and it makes us restless to bring more of our King’s “flourishing” to our neighbors. In short, the Gospel should make us great neighbors. Our Neighborhood Renewal Team exists to help bring God’s healing and justice to our neighborhood. In our efforts to bring concrete Kingdom-change to our neighborhood, we prize face-to-face relationships, tangible local ministry, partnerships with others who love our neighborhood, and Gospel-driven motivation.
